Thoughts of Depression is a name under which a number of projects on the subject of depression will be developed in the future.
Its overall mission is to facilitate easy accessible and sharable information about depression, in order to develop a richer awareness on the matter an increase our ability to talk about it and support one another.

The MindBrowser

When someone close to you goes through an episode, you only see bits and pieces of the thoughts and logic that come with this disorder. It becomes hard to understand their actions and reactions and can leave you feeling guilty for not understanding or powerless for not knowing how to help them. The MindBrowser is a concept for a digital tool that takes you into the reality of someone with depression. Thoughts are abstracted into words to show a train of thought as it could appear in the mind of a depressed person. Additionally there is explanatory text on the type of depression and how to cope as an outsider.

The illustrated thoughts are co-created with people who have dealt with depression themselves, they offer insight in the self-reinforcing reality that is experienced during an episode. The MindBrowser can help create a bigger understanding towards depression for people who are unfamiliar with these feelings. It is meant to help make different choices in communication and a difficult time a bit more intelligible.

The Conversations

When I started researching depression, I approached the subject from a very broad perspective. Besides conducting desk research, I spoke to people who had dealt with depression about the reactions toward their illness from their surroundings; what was the reciprocity between them, what was good about that and looking back, what would they have wanted differently? Also I spoke with the people in their close surroundings about their findings in that period? What were the feelings they were dealing with regarding the depression? What would they have liked differently?

And finally, with everyone I talked with I discussed the general thoughts on depression in our society.

The Project

Thoughts of Depression is one of my Graduation Projects at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Under this name I present the idea of the MindBrowser, which is shown on this website. It is still a concept but my aim is to further develop it into an accessible, informative tool. Besides that, I am planning on doing projects on the subject of pre- and postnatal depression and the children of depressed parents. Because of children of depressed parents are a big risk group of also getting depressed in their adult lives.

If you are interested in the MindBrowser, a collaboration or if you want more information, don’t hesitate to contact me! I am looking for partners to actualise my concepts with.
